Some of the main causes of the Haitian revolution were social division and dissatisfaction with the government. Even though their were some free Africans with a normal paying job, most of them were in poverty and slaves. These slaves worked at salt mines which had very poor working conditions and resulted in the deaths of many people because of working in these mines or not having money to afford medicine or go see a doctor to help them. With these conditions came dissatisfaction with the government. Many slaves and natives revolted due to the racism from the government.
